The grouped
solar carbon
credit project

WHAT IS A CARBON CREDIT AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO A SOLAR INSTALLATION?
A carbon credit signifies the prevention or removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions from the atmosphere. Solar photovoltaic installations assist in achieving this by displacing the electricity that otherwise would have been sourced from, for example, a coal-based electricity grid.

A carbon credit is a certificate that represents the removal of or keeping out of the atmosphere one tonne of carbon emissions by real actions.

Carbon credits can potentially be generated when renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar, displace more traditional carbon-intensive fossil fuel energy sources, such as coal or gas. In our case, solar PV electricity is displacing the coal-intensive national grid.

To ensure the robustness of real greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution reduction, our grouped solar carbon credit project is audited by a third-party auditor who inspects and confirms the avoidance of carbon and other GHGs in accordance with international standards.

After the auditor’s robust investigation and recommendation, carbon credits are issued according to the carbon credit standards, endorsed by additional carbon credit standard-specific internal quality checks. The carbon credits are now ready to be purchased.

Who then buys the carbon credits? Entities such as companies and corporations, individuals and consumers, and even investors buy the carbon credits, motivated by a desire to mitigate climate change, meet emissions reduction targets, and support sustainable development initiatives.

Once a person or business buys a carbon credit, they can keep or voluntarily retire it. The latter means that it can no longer be used by anyone else.
What is the purpose
of carbon credits?
Carbon credits assign a financial value to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions. This creates an economic incentive for businesses, governments, and individuals to invest in projects such as solar photovoltaic installations that reduce or remove GHG emissions.

How are the carbon credits “made” or generated?
Owners or authorised representatives of eligible solar photovoltaic installations (see more information about eligibility below) provide their electricity generation data and other information to Carbon Disclosure SA, and we drive the carbon credit generation process on their behalf. A third-party auditor reviews the information to ensure that the solar installation, in fact, did generate the renewable energy which resulted in the avoidance of GHG pollution. The audit report is submitted to a carbon credit standard and this standard issues the carbon credits.
Both the auditor and the carbon credit standard should be reputable to ensure the value of the carbon credits.

Who buys carbon credits?
Several entities buy carbon credits for various reasons. Here are some of the primary buyers:

Companies and corporations

Individuals and consumers

Investors
How can I participate in the Grouped Solar Carbon Credit Project?
A solar installation owner or authorised representative can participate in the carbon credit project by contacting us at Carbon Disclosure SA to discuss the eligibility of the solar installation. The major qualifying criteria include the following:

Eligible solar installations register with Carbon Disclosure SA, and we drive the carbon credit generation process. For this we use the data of the solar installation, including its capacity, location and electricity generation.
We also manage the external audit of the data, whereafter carbon credits are issued and sold to various clients. A portion of the net revenue is shared with the solar installation owner or authorised representative according to formal upfront agreements with them.
There is no upfront cost, subscription model, or risk carried by the solar installation owner or representative.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Revenue generated via this project extends beyond being a one-time occurrence. Instead, being part of the Grouped Solar Carbon Credit Project can provide a form of annual annuity income that grows for each solar installation the owner or authorised representative adds.
